The chances of indulging in substance abuse are higher when a blood relative already has a disorder. Environment also plays a very crucial role. Families, where alcohol and drugs are used, the chances of child engaging in substance are also quite high.

The drug affects the brain function, cause neurotic problems and also starts affecting the relationship at home and work. Treatment depends on the frequency and duration of substance usage. Only counselling can help if the duration of usage is not long. But if it has been for quite some time, then medication is also required to be taken to re-establish normal brain functions and to decrease cravings. Causes of substance abuse are over consumption of drugs or alcohol and losing self control.
